About the Authors

Courtney Macavinta and Andrea Vander Pluym are award-winning writers who both got their start in journalism on their high school newspapers. Their collaboration began on the creative leadership team at ChickClick, a ground-breaking online and radio network that served over a million girls and women.

Andrea is also the author of What Should I Do? (Scholastic), an advice book for preteen girls. Her articles and columns have appeared in Teen, Planet Girl, Moxie Girl, Shape, Variety, Los Angeles View, Kitchen Sink, and other publications. After struggling with the messages mainstream teen media was giving to girls, Andrea dedicated herself to supporting girls in getting honest and real advice about their bodies, minds, and futures.

In 1999, she joined ChickClick, where she launched new content, including teen essays and fiction, and oversaw daily production as managing editor. Andrea has also lectured on writing for teens at national conferences, including those hosted by the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators, and has been a guest speaker for several high schools' journalism programs. She volunteers as an assistant instructor for teen self-defense workshops, and has volunteered with Bay Area Teen Voices, Girls in the Hall, and GirlVentures.
