Advocates
Envision these outcomes for your own Respect Rally!

"I am sincere when I say that the past week of Respect Rx assemblies for more than 1,500 girls throughout Connecticut was the most enriching week I have ever spent in my 42 years in education. As a result of the program, many of the girls will be empowered to make changes that will help them develop into strong women who are confident, capable and self-reliant."
—Robert Lehr, Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference & Connecticut Association of Schools

“In my 25 years in education, I've never been to an assembly where you can hear the overhead lights buzzing at times that's how engrossed the girls were in the program.”
—Deborah Rutigliano, Vice Principal, City Hill Middle School

"Courtney is able to connect with young women in a manner that at once opens them up to their most vulnerable selves, and also allows them to identify and stand in their power. Her ability to connect with young women across class, race, and age, coupled with her passion to truly partner with young women to create social change, has made her an invaluable resource."
—Patricia Torres, Program Director, Girls For A Change

Evaluation Comments: Adult Training Participants
“I respected the safe environment—many wonderful activities to use with my students.”

“It was interactive and transformative.”

“I liked the positive focus on action-based resources and materials. I rediscovered that opening up personally and connecting with kids is how you begin to impact them.”

“The presenters were incredible! I'm inspired to create a similar lesson plan for the students in my school.”

“I'm now inspired to enact changes in my school and to make a DIFFERENCE!”

“We were so excited by the program and the direct impact it can have with the young women at our school. We are already planning to meet tomorrow to summarize what we learned and begin to formulate a plan for our girls.”

Girl Participants
“I was really inspired. I came home today and looked in the mirror and was surprised to find that I was actually proud of who I saw. I think it’s because of what you said about respecting yourself and being happy with who you are. Thank you so much for helping me achieve better self-esteem in just one day.”

“My favorite part of the assembly was how we went forward five years to meet our Future Self. I thought it was so cool. I also loved how you shared your story from when you were younger. I think it touched everyone’s hearts. Thank you for coming to our school; it was very fun and interesting, I think all other girls in different schools would love it too!”

“I liked that it was hands-on, not all listening.”

“I learned that you shouldn't change who you are because real friends should accept you for you and for the ones that don't, they weren't meant to be in your life.”

“You showed me that I can be what I want to be, and that you can be yourself, anytime, anyplace.”

“It made me realize that whenever I think times are rough, that someone loves me for being ME!!! Your assembly today also made me remember that I need to stop being who everyone else wants me to be, and just be who I want to be. Thank you for setting me straight and realizing the important things, and not just the foolish things that seem to fill teenagers’ minds. You inspired me today!”

“Girls in my school who are geeks, popular, and goth showed their true selves.”

“People in my grade that I thought would never speak up actually talked. Although I wasn't one of them, I really enjoyed hearing what they had to say and saw them in a different way. I really liked what you did and think people might actually change from it.”

"I wanted to tell you that your program did boost my confidence. It was incredible how just one little program could do that to you. I mean, I saw the other girls share their personal insecurities and it made me comfortable in my own skin. Everyone has their amazing qualities that make them who they are and unique. I learned that if we tried to be like other people, we're just lying to ourselves and not becoming who we really are. I also learned that you shouldn't change who you are because real friends should accept you for you."

Participants: Girls in grades 6-12; can be modified to be a co-ed event.

Number of participants: Up to 500 depending on space.

Length of the program: Respect Rallies were designed as a full-day immersion experience. A Respect Rally can also be a component of a larger conference, leadership program or camp. In addition, the modules can be broken up and delivered workshop-style over the course of a few weeks.

Format: 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. (with 45-minute lunch break); can be modified to fit a school's schedule.

Space needs: All participants gather in one space throughout the rally (lunch can be served elsewhere). One large room, cafeteria, gymnasium, or a theater without fixed seating—ideally, the space includes a stage. Portable chairs needed. For groups larger than 60, an LCD projector and screen are required along with two microphones.

Facilitated by: Respect Rx team or trained Rally Leaders who want to implement the program at schools, community centers, colleges, non-profit organizations, parent groups, community coalitions and ventures that empower girls and women.

This example is facilitated for girls only by Respect Rx's Founder Courtney. However, trained Respect Rally Leaders can facilitate and appoint a keynote speaker of their choice—including a role model from their community (such as themselves!) or a powerful girl speaker.

8:30-9:00
• Girls check-in and enjoy breakfast
• Music plays in main auditorium; as girls enter, the MC (Respect Rx staff or a volunteer) welcomes them from the stage and gets them fired up

9:00-9:25
• Respect Icebreakers: Interactive, physical activities led by facilitators to set the day’s tone and bring the girls together

9:30-9:55
• Keynote—Courtney’s inspirational story: The Road to Respect

10:00-10:10
• Design our Pact: Creating a safe space in which to share thoughts and issues
• Your Rights & The 7 Steps to Respect: Girls take the stage to read lists (provided by Respect Rx) to the whole group

10:10-10:30
• Rx Group No. 1: Disrespect. Girls break out into smaller dialogue circles and have a facilitated discussion and activity period.
• We engage in a cornerstone activity: Respect Connect (Causes & Effects of Disrespect)

10:30-11:15
• Rx Group No. 2: Self-Respect. Girls break out into smaller dialogue circles and have a facilitated discussion and activity period.
• Share: Girls take the stage to share their small group confessions. After each girl speaks up, they are affirmed with a unique support of energy—Respect Rx style!
• Groups Report: Respect Connect (Solutions)

11:15-11:50
• Self-Respect: Girls are led through a 10-minute visualization and journaling activity
• Duos: Girls break into pairs to share about the activity
• Duos: Passion Coaching

11:50-12:00
• Re-cap morning activities
• Pre-lunch Physical Activity
• Lunch activity explained

12:00-12:45
LUNCH

12:45-1:30
• Rx Group No. 3: Mutual Respect. Girls break out into smaller dialogue circles and have a facilitated discussion and activity period
• Listening 101
• Sisterhood Line

1:30-2:15
• Rx Group No. 4: Spreading Respect. Complete Respect Connect to design social change commitments in small groups

2:15-2:25
• Commitment: A powerful personal vow for more respect in—Myself, My Relationships, My World

2:25-3:00
• Celebrate. Girls volunteer to take the stage to share their commitments

3:00-3:30
• Check out: Lock in the day with final words of inspiration
• Explain the 6-month activity plan that follows the Rally, such as forming Respect Rx Groups to continue the transformation started at the Rally
• Girls feel refreshed, inspired, and empowered as we physically create our Respect Connection through the last physical activity
With this model, the Respect Rx team trains girl advocates and organizations to facilitate a Respect Rally. Along with providing more freedom in scheduling, this model allows host organizations to adapt the Rally as they see fit and deliver the program annually. Another benefit is the option of delivering the Rally tools and exercises in several units rather than a day-long event. Completing our training allows for optimal customization and wider reach. You’ll gain invaluable coaching and facilitation skills along with optional CEUs.

The following Respect Rx services and materials are included in the training:

Training Day and Kit

2. Next steps to plan your Rally (2 hours)

3. Receive a Respect Rally Kit on CD, which includes:
• Facilitation guide
• Access to Web video tutorials that demo activities
• Evaluation kit (pre-program survey; post-program evaluation; 3-months later survey)
• Activity sheet template for girl participants
• Respect Rx gift for each girl

I often appear on San Francisco's "View from the Bay" show as a teen and girl culture expert. Here are recent segments:

"Dealing with sexual harassment and your teens" Does your teenage daughter know when she's being sexually harassed? It's far more prevalent than you might think. Courtney Macavinta, co-author of "Respect: A Girl's Guide to Getting Respect & Dealing," has some tips on talking to your children. Watch the clip.
(06/10/08)

"Much Ado About Miley:" Miley Cyrus’ sexy Vanity Fair photo shoot and her subsequent offer from Playboy are on the tips of collective tongues everywhere. Add in the sexy new Gossip Girl ad currently making waves—and focus on disturbing girl fight videos being posted on the web—and it’s no wonder that many parents are obviously concerned about how their daughters are being influenced by these media blasts and celebrity role models. Watch the clip here.
(05/14/08)

"Self-Respect for Teens:" A teenage girl's life today is often ruled by unrealistic images and ideals. This may be limiting their personal potential by creating a negative body image and putting them under unnecessary pressure. Here's what we can do as parents to encourage our girls to hold their heads up high with self-respect.

Did you know that…

…50 % of teens in serious relationships say they've gone against their beliefs in order to please their partner and for 1 in 4 girls this meant going further sexually than they wanted.

…70% of girls ages 15 to 17 avoid normal daily activities such as attending school, going to the doctor, or even giving their opinion due to feeling “badly” about their looks.

…57% of U.S. teens have had a friend in an abusive relationship.

...8.8 million children in the U.S. witness a crime in their home each year.

…90% of girls say they have endured sexual harassment including teasing, touching or rumors.

…during adolescence, girls’ self-esteem drops twice as much as boys.

Though the status quo paints a grim picture, there is a remedy: Respect. True respect is always within reach, because true respect starts on the inside. And once you have it, you’re empowered to spread it.

Respect Rally
rally: to come together for a common purpose. to be inspired to take action.

Picture a gymnasium filled with hundreds of teen girls, sitting in circles, listening intently to each other, doing engaging group activities, sharing their deepest feelings and hopes for themselves, and working together to design a new world where all girls are respected and respect each other.

Picture each girl walking away from the day empowered to boost self-respect, sisterhood and social change in her life (and our world). This is what happens when girls attend a Respect Rally.

The Respect Rally is a program for those who want to create an enriching, full-scale girl retreat that addresses many of the tough universal issues girls struggle with everywhere. Respect Rallies can either be delivered by the Respect Rx team or led by trained Rally Leaders (such as staff at girl organizations, educators, guidance counselors, school therapists, coaches, parents, youth group leaders, older teens, college students or a coalition of girl advocates). By hosting a Respect Rally, girl advocates can bring a powerful, proven program to their organization. And as an added bonus, the Rally can be modified and presented as a co-ed experience as needed.

After the Rally, you can use the Respect Rally: Keep It Going! Kit, which includes a 6-month program along with many other activities, to keep the respect flowing and growing.

Our goal by the end of 2009, is to train 2,000 Rally Leaders to lead one or more Rallies for up to 500 girls in their community: 1,000,000 girls empowered. And that’s just year one.

Ready to rally?
Respect Rally: Target Outcomes
self-respect: belief in your own worth and dignity

Respect Rallies inspire girls to change their worlds—inside and out—and empower them with lasting life skills. When girls leave a Respect Rally, they are equipped to:

boost their self-respect: Our activities and exercises are designed to foster young women’s confidence, self-worth and belief in themselves. Through guided self-reflection and interactive exercises, girls feel liberated to follow their personal passions, set new boundaries and goals, speak up and get help when they need it. No goal is unattainable after a Respect Rally!

promote mutual respect: At a Respect Rally, girls develop their ability to truly listen and to understand people from all walks of life. Walls and stereotypes break down as girls bond through their shared experiences. Along the way, girls learn nonviolence strategies and how to stand for equal rights for all.

make positive choices: No doubt about it—peer pressure and toxic temptations are more prevalent than ever for teens. Respect Rx Founder Courtney and Rally Leaders share their personal stories of the rocky yet rewarding road to self-respect to let girls know they’re not alone—and it’s never too late to make changes. Respect Rallies show girls how to do just that.

create change as leaders: Learning how to create social change is a major component of Respect Rallies. Girls emerge as role models prepared to model respect and create change in their own homes, schools and communities.

Here's what girls have to say about RESPECT, Respect Rx and our Rallies and workshops:

“You coming to my school today made me learn a lot about how important it really is to respect yourself and others, and also how important it is to be real and yourself. I'm going to start trying to reach my dreams and passions and encourage my friends and peers to do the same just like you encouraged us today.”

“Mind-opening…”

“At the assembly, people in my grade that I thought would never speak up actually talked, and I really enjoyed hearing what they had to say. It made me see them in a different way. I really liked what you did, and I think people might actually change from it.”

“Empowering…”

“I learned a lot when you came to my school today. I was extremely surprised about how much models get Photoshop-ed, and it made me realize that I don’t have to be like those models to feel good about myself. I also loved how you shared your story from when you were a little kid. I think it touched everyone’s hearts.”

“Life-changing…”

“You showed me that I can be what I want to be, and that you can be yourself, any time, any place. I learned that none of us are perfect, and that we need to be okay with ourselves. Thanks so much!”

“I felt like I was in such a secure environment that I could talk about [anything]. I am happy to say I took away a feeling of self-confidence and inner joy from your presentation.”

“Courtney is an inspiration.”

“The thing I loved the most was when you told us to think into the future, and our future selves gave us one word to remember. I thought of the word ‘love.’ It made me realize that whenever I think times are rough that someone loves me for being ME!!! Your assembly today also made me remember that I need to stop being who everyone else wants me to be, and just be who I want to be. Thank you for setting me straight and realizing the important things, and not just the foolish things that seem to fill teenagers’ minds. You inspired me today!”

“Today I learned that respect comes when you respect yourself.”

I saw your presentation and it really helped me out a lot. I got your book as a gift from my mother about a year ago, and since I read it, I've had such a better way of dealing with problems with friends. I learned that although it might be hard to stand up to someone, in the end, its worth it. Now I won't be sad everyday because of mean things that she said about me, and it was all because of your book! So I wanted to say thanks for coming to my school. It really helped to be reminded that I need to speak up.
~Amber

I was really inspired by your talk. I came home today and looked in the mirror and was surprised to find that I was actually proud of who I saw. I think it’s because of what you said about respecting yourself and being happy with who you are. Thank you so much for helping me achieve a better self-esteem in just one talk.
~Jordan

the 7 respect basics are great and every girl should live by them.
~Victoria

courtney i really loved your meeting that day and i wish we had more opportunities like that in school and even during school have you come and talk to our whole school. You should give it a thought lol i'm sure you wouldn't but my school could use it especially with the name calling and well pretty much that and fighting you know around that category. Thanks for taking your time to give me these pointers.
~Amanda

I was one of the girls at your Respect event. I just wanted to tell you that I think you are an amazing woman that made me look at a lot of things differently(for the better!) I did not leave this e-mail address on the sheet simply because I don't have one, this address is my mom's but you can reply to this one. If possible I would like to know how I could get a free copy of your book as you had told us in Lacrosse. I'll be honest with you and say that I at first went to your event with my school's guidance counselors to get a free day off of school, I didn't really know much about it at that time, and when I walked into the building and saw that you were Courtney Macavinta, I was impressed(if thats the word I'm meaning) As soon as I saw my surroundings, I knew that this was going to be something I wanted to know and listen to. With my experiences with things such as Respect events like yours, there was always the beautiful model like person pretty much saying, "you have to respect yourself, your body and mind." and it just didn't seem so "realistic" coming from someone like that. I saw that you were the author of this book and thought, "wow, that woman is beautiful, inside and out. I can tell she respects herself including her environment and surroundings and now she's helping other girls to do the same, and that makes her beautiful." The fact that you were so laid back and honest made me comfortable in listening to things being said by you and my peers and it made me comfortable in realizing, life isn't perfect nor is anyone. Everyone has their flaws and that makes us what we are and gives us our own personalities. I just want to simply say thank-you for what you're doing for the female gender today and I hope your wise words, feelings, and outlooks get out to each and every person in the world.
~Jeannie

I was one of the girls that was at that respect workshop. I've been doing good since then I've been trying to help other girls with their problems and i have been getting help with my problems too. I'm doing a lot better. I was wondering if maybe you could send me a book please because i would like to read it and let other people read it too so they know.
~Daisy

You spoke to a group of girls on Friday last week. I felt really good after I talked to you because you had so many good points.
~Chelsea

i attended the girls for a change summit and i was in your 7 respect basics workshop. i found it to be very helpful and i look forward to reading your book on respect. i keep the respect by allowing everyone to say what they want to say, allowing everyone to express their feelings and thoughts, and by setting my barriers up[ to the disrespectful people and their actions. i am maturing , becoming more focused on my goals as well as more aware of society's expectations of me as an individual. i have pretty much defined what it takes to have a healthy mind and body. i respect myself by eating properly, expanding my horizons, cherishing my friendships, being sensitive to the needs and feelings of others, and having fun in life. i was and still kind of am one of those girls who were so wrapped up in what the looked like in comparison to their friends and being obsessed with her body image so much that her friends have stopped trying to convince her that she's not actually fat at all...and after reading this section on this webpage i finally understand what my friends and family have been trying to tell me all along...so i took your advice and decided to clear my mind of all the negative thoughts i had about my body's appearance. I stopped using the " language of fat" and i started complimenting my friends on their achievements and encouraged them when they were down. i really feel that reading this article helped me with my feelings and opinions of my own body and others around me. I really believe that what was said in this article is true.. you can't be a role model if you don't love yourself... i just want to say thank you for helping me feel better about myself!
~Charity

your book really helped me. i've changed a lot this year. i'm hanging around more positive people and dressing how i want to and doing my homework. i'm getting straight As. i know that i have a lot going for me now. i even spoke at a fundraiser for a girls for a change and it felt good.
~Monica

Your book is an inspiration!
~Nicole

Thank you so much for your talk. It really motivated me in lots of ways.
~Shio

Your book is helpful to everyone in some sort of way. Thank you for putting all your time and energy into helping everyone.
~Roxy

I learned a lot about respect!
~Leslie

Thank you so much for talking with us. I will read the book!
~Nicole

Thank you for teaching us all about sisterhood.
~Nakita

Thanks for teaching us about friendship and respect.
~Brooke

I had so much fun at your workshop. It really changed my mind about some things.
~Stephanie

Thank you for the book and for talking with us. I read a lot and LOVE it!

Respect Rally
PROGRAM: 1 day event with 6-months of follow-up activities to keep it going!
This is what happens when girls attend a day-long Respect Rally. Check out the Respect Rally info page!

Respect Rx Leadership Retreat
PROGRAM: 1 week
Girls who complete a Respect Rally are eligible to apply to attend the annual Respect Rx Leadership Retreat (July 2009) to take their self-respect and social change skills to the next level!

Assemblies & Workshops
PROGRAM: 1 to 4 hours workshops; 15 min. to 1 hour keynotes
Courtney is available to keynote conferences and to conduct workshops and assemblies. Her workshops are interactive and intimate. Courtney’s approach is to share her personal story of how she got on the road to respect after a tough childhood and many painful mistakes. After sharing her own experiences, she listens to girls about the issues that concern or hurt them the most. Finally, she empowers girls through skill-building activities how to boost their self-respect, make sisterhood a important value in their lives, and to take action to positively change the world for all girls.

Break-Out Workshop Topics
The Respect Basics
Find out how respect is connected to everything: your feelings about yourself, your choices, your relationships and your future. Learn the secrets to boosting your self-respect, making healthy choices, creating respect in your relationships, and changing your world for the better.

My Body, Myself
Your body is your home sweet home. Yet, there are a lot of forces out there that can make a girl disconnect from her body, disrespect her health, or even hate her body (and the person who lives there). Learn how to identify toxic influences that mess with your body image, to make healthy choices that support your values and goals, and how to love yourself for real (mind, body, soul and all!).

Sisterhood
If disrespect or drama is going down at your school or among your friends—like name-calling, rumors, sexual harassment—find out how you can take a stand and make changes. Learn how to make sisterhood an important part of your life, how to support other girls and how to work together to make respect rule your school.

Change Your World, Girl! (Social Change & Leadership)
Learn how to fight for Your Rights and change your community working side by side with other girls. Find out how to lead meetings, get organized around a cause, plan a campaign for change, and make your voice heard with politicians and decision-makers. Plus, learn how sisterhood can change the world!

Getting REAL
Girls and women don’t have to let unrealistic ideals diminish their power. They can get REAL instead…I've teamed up with the amazing Audrey Brashich, author of ALL MADE UP: A Girl’s Guide to Seeing Through Celebrity Hype & Celebrating Real Beauty, to deliver an empowering workshop for teen girls and young women about how to recognize their REAL assets. During these interactive workshops and keynotes, girls and women learn how to boost their media literacy, improve their body image and be REAL role models. Learn more about this special program...
